Amra Padatik: An Inovative Initiative

'Amara Padatik' an organization of children of sex workers has organized a three days program at Abinash Kaviraj Street of Sonagachi on dated 5th October to 7th October 2009 mainly in the objective to raise consciousness about the child labour issues to the people of Sonagachi as well as to the general mass of Kolkata. Amra Padatik - since its inception (in the year of 2006) engaged in various social issues starting from Child marriage to trafficking of children both in sex work and in the other settings. Amra Padatik organised a "Rally" to raise consciousness on "Child labour", on 5th October 2009 at 3.00pm. The rally was started from Abinas Kabiraj Street covered all lanes and by lanes of Sonagachi and ended at the same place it was started. Approximately One thousand and two hundred children of sex workers from different parts of West Bengal came and participate in this rally. Apart from that, non-sex workers, and sex worker from their mother organization 'Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee' also joined in the rally. Their spontaneous presence made the rally enlivening. The rally was inaugurated by Respected Mayor of Kolkata Mr. Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. Immediately after the inauguration the participants were marching with their destination with slogans like "Sishu Shram Manchhina Manbona", etc breaking the silence of the day. The objective of this rally was to promote awareness to the mass of Sonagachi regarding harmfulness of Child Marriage and trafficking to the society and it had a great impact on general mass.
